Regina, Sask is a long way from the large international hubs of world travel. We usually need at least one intermediate connection, sometimes two but seldom more than three. No exception here ….. hop stop this time is Toronto, with only a two hour layover (that morphed into 3 hours and multiple gated changes) – then an 6 hour plus seat scrunch, with spotty potty breaks, followed by periods of intermittent fitful sleep.
No matter how many trips we make we never get use to the time change, the airplain food, the stale air and the mind numbing constant drone of the engines. Hey though, it only lasts 6 …. long, excruciating, sleep deprived ….. hours and even though this trip is not over, we can’t wait for the next to start.
While we do hope the seat accommodations are better this round – we are beside the first bulkhead, where you can actually stretch your legs. Last time we tried this we were in the center seats and everyone tried to use it as an aisle, disrupting us constantly! This time we picked the window seats ….. and no interruptions ….. except for all the people waiting to use the toilet.
This is the first overseas trip for the grandkids and unfortunately Taylan was ill until 5 hours after we landed.
While we were in Toronto he rested on the floor, so Shayne downloaded a fireplace video and we had a camp out. We figured it must have been a combination of motion sickness and air pressure as he couldn’t properly “pop” his ears when the plane changed altitude.
The landing at Amsterdam Schiphol airport was uneventful. Even the passport /customs check was a breeze. Pickup the luggage, get train tickets and a quick order of food for the grandkids ….. then run for the train (which is under the airport) …. almost missing it. 1.5 hours to Zwolle and then 30 minutes to Ommem. We unload all luggage and kids …. have a beer stop waiting for the Dutch relatives. Hugs all around when they arrive. Christa, Gerda and Brad go with Arie (Gerda’s cousin) to pick up the cars, while Brian and Shayne have another beer time.
After lunch we traveled to Den Ham to visit the relatives farm house. From there we headed for a quick tour of our rental house, just outside of Den Ham, with a promise to return to the farm house in an hour for dinner. Well, it took us almost an hour just to find the rental house – we got lost three times! It was a lot more difficult to find then we originally thought. Turns out that Brian had one address and Gerda another, plus the picture was also wrong ….. so much for advanced planning. Oh well it all turned out okay in the end.
Back to the farm house … late for dinner …. where a lot of the relatives had stopped by for a visit. We didn’t stay too long, being travel jangled and very tired (the constant sound of languages you don’t understand tends to make it even worse) … heading back to the rental after less then 2 hours.
This (9:30 pm) is the earliest we’ve gone to bed since the last trip.
